Phase I: Foundation
As in any large undertaking, a robust foundation or infrastructure needs to be in place in order to support the end result. The first step, with the permission of the copyright holders, is to move the scripture content and resources into a digital format. Since we participated in the successful implementation of a digital standard for scriptures [OSIS], it has enabled us to concentrate on conversion utilities. These conversion utilities allow for the migration of scripture text from the USFM standard used by translators to a more flexible digital format, XML. The existence of our editor and the conversion utilities means that extensive technical knowledge is not required for use, nor is there a significant learning curve to implement these new technologies. As a result, new possibilities exist for creating products and resources containing scripture content to meet specific needs. Virtual Storehouse technologies, combined with digitally formatted Bibles and scripture content opens up a whole new realm of possibilities that may not otherwise exist. These possibilities may include the ability to:
- Create print-ready diglots on the fly [choose the language and translation]
- Create print-ready scripture –whole Bibles or scripture portions in response to global events [tsunamis, hurricanes, mudslides, etc.]
- Deliver scripture text, audio, and/or video via the web, PDA, cell phone.
- Deliver scripture to the masses in a language and a format that will meet them where they are, when they need it most. This includes previously unreached people groups due to language obstacles or geographical barriers.
- Create portions of scripture or Bibles branded specifically for the military, mission organizations, people groups and/or other cultures.
- Create collateral content [audio, video, slides, web] for other resources based on scripture content.
- Connect to and make available collateral resources for study and learning such as:
- Commentaries
- Greek/Hebrew Dictionaries
- Cross-References
Technologies are able to overcome barriers that inhibit the spreading of God’s word due to language and/or geography. As barriers are eliminated, the potential impact and reach of God’s word is exponentially expanded. Therein is the underlying need for Virtual Storehouse.
